- Philippians 4:16-17
... ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
I will use 1 Kings seventeenth chapter to illustrate the above scripture. From verse 8, God said to Elijah, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
Elijah probably had a thought, that maybe she is a wealthy person in that city. But, No! She was in a desperate situation with her son, that if nothing miraculous happens same day, it would probably be their end.
So, God sent a prophet in need, as it were, to sustain a widow that is in need as well? This does not sound right the hearing of many or any, yet, God's ways is past finding out.
Now, Elijah have to work in obedience to receive from the widow, and the widow have to work in faith and obedience to give from the very very little she has. Despirate situation ehm!
What about "if" Elijah had refuse to receive from the widow, after learning about her situation? God would have sent someone else to sustain her, since she responded.
The other way now; what about "if" the widow had refused to respond to Elijah? God would have sustained Elijah through other means, then the woman would have been in trouble. Both would have been in trouble had any or both disobeyed.
But! By simple act of obedience both were sustained all through the famine season(s) with just a handful of flour, are you kidding me?! She, her household and Elijah? Yeah!!!
How come?
They acted in obedience to God’s Word and the blessing preserved them, 1 Kings 17:14-16.
So, in Philippians 4:17, we see why Apostle Paul said to the Philippian church "not because I desire a gift", sure he must have some needs, but he is not trusting in man to meat his needs, even though God will use man. What if, they don't obey? In no distant time they would run out of supply,(remember, he give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater, Isaiah 55:10) other would take their place, Luke 19:40., this is maybe why some are in financial mess today; disobedience...
It take obedience to keep the supply lines opened to both parties; the giver and the receiver.
Have a fruitful week, in Jesus name!
Jesus is Lord!
